The surroundings
Ca' Salicornia is located in the historic center of Venice, in a strategic position between Rialto and San Marco / San Zaccaria. The proximity of Rialto makes it convenient for the train station, Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto and from the nearby Fondamenta Nove, the airport, Murano, Burano and Torcello are easily reachable. From San Marco / San Zaccaria you can reach the Lido, San Giorgio, San Servolo and Giudecca with a vaporetto. Three vaporetto stops: Rialto, Fondamenta Nove and San Zaccaria are easily reachable on foot in 10 minutes.
Although it is centrally located, it is located on a quiet street, away from the popular tourist routes.
The Castello district is the largest and most populous in Venice. It is located at the eastern end of the city and, comparing Venice to a fish, Castello represents the tail. It borders to the west with the districts of San Marco and Cannaregio, while on all other sides it is bordered by the Venice Lagoon. It is the only district of Venice that does not overlook the Grand Canal. Even the Castello district, like that of San Marco, has a history that began several centuries ago. It derives its name from a fort on the island of San Pietro in Castello (once called the island of Olivolo). The district is rich in history and monuments to admire, some examples are provided by the Arsenal and the Basilica of San Pietro di Castello. Also inside are the main pavilions of the Venice Biennale. It is a very characteristic area of the city and "Venetian", you cannot leave Venice without first taking a walk through its streets.
Worth visiting around the apartment.
- Church of Santa Maria Formosa - According to legend, commissioned by San Magno, it was rebuilt in the 11th century and then rebuilt on previous foundations in 1492, maintaining the original Greek cross plan. The church is located in one of the most picturesque areas of Venice, surrounded by buildings from different eras.
- Palazzo Querini Stampalia - Renaissance style, it contains antique furniture and paintings of great quality and a rich library.
- Basilica of SS. Giovanni e Paolo - Built in 1368, the grand plan of the Gothic basilica has five arcaded apses. It is the pantheon of Venice, because it houses the tombs of twenty-five doges and illustrious leaders of the Serenissima Republic, buried in sumptuous tombs. Additionally, a large altarpiece by Giovanni Bellini decorates the altar of San Vincenzo Ferrer and an altarpiece by Lorenzo Lotto shows the almsgiving of San Antonino.
- Church of San Francesco della Vigna
- The construction of this church was the result of the donation of land made to the Franciscan friars by Marco Ziani, the son of Doge Pietro, in 1253. It was a plot of land, cultivated with vines and therefore the name of San Francesco della Vigna remains. The church was rebuilt based on a design by Jacopo Sansovino, while the elegant façade is the work of Andrea Palladio.
