The surroundings
The Cannaregio district is the largest in the city after Castello and the most populated. Cannaregio in fact occupies almost the entire part of the city north of the Grand Canal, extending from the train station (low numbers), north of the Santa Croce district to which it is connected via the Ponte degli Scalzi and the Ponte della Costituzione, up to Castello, with which it borders to the east and south almost entirely, with the exception of the parish of San Canciano which borders Campo San Bartolomeo, in the San Marco district.
The main waterway is the Cannaregio Canal , which connects the Grand Canal with the lagoon. It is the only internal canal in the historic center, in addition to the Grand Canal, to be crossed by vaporetti. The name is presumed to derive from the vast reed beds present when the area was still uninhabited.
The Ghetto of Venice is located in this sestiere, reachable by a "sotopòrtego" located at the foot of the Ponte delle Guglie and on which the iron hinges of the doors that once closed the Ghetto at night are still clearly visible. In the Jewish quarter there are still 5 synagogues, some of which are open to the public with visits from the Jewish Museum.
The main artery of the entire sestiere is Strada Nova , a wide road that leads from the Santa Lucia station to Rialto. This journey of about 25 minutes begins at the foot of the Ponte degli Scalzi (Grand Canal side) and the church of Santa Maria degli Scalzi and ends in Campo dei Santi Apostoli.
At the extreme north of Cannaregio and Venice, between the Ghetto of Venice, the Sant'Alvise
church
and the Madonna dell'Orto
church
there are long foundations full of youth clubs. In addition to the above-mentioned churches, also worthy of note are the Santa Maria dei Miracoli church
, located at the southern end of the sestiere and the first example of a Renaissance church in Venice, the Santi Apostoli church
and the Gesuiti church
(Santa Maria Assunta).
