The surroundings
The San Polo district is the one characterized by the highest concentration of tavern shops: especially typical Venetian bacari. Bathed by the Grand Canal, the district is served by line 1 of the public Vaporetto system through the ACTV Rialto Mercato and San Silvestro docks. Line 2 also reaches San Polo with the “San Tomà” dock. However, the most used dock to reach the most touristic area of the neighborhood is the Rialto in the San Marco district.
The San Polo district borders to the north and west with that of Santa Croce, having as a demarcation line the Rio di San Stae, the Rio Marin, and the second part of Rio della Frescada, up to the entire parish of San Pantalon. The San Polo district also borders to the south with Dorsoduro, while for the remaining perimeter it is surrounded by the Grand Canal. The most historically important area is Rialto, once one with the current San Marco district to which it is connected via the Rialto Bridge .
The area covered by the current districts of San Polo and Santa Croce at the beginning of the history of Venice constituted a single large area called Luprio. In this area the Serenissima had its salt mines. The current district takes its name from its most important church, the church of San Paolo Apostolo, San Polo for the Venetians.
Undoubtedly of greater historical importance in this area is the Rialto area, with its Bridge, the typical fish and vegetable market and the Church of San Giacomo di Rialto, traditionally considered the oldest in Venice. The first construction of this church in fact seems to date back to the 6th century, that is, even before the actual city center was formed. Also of great architectural importance and high artistic importance are the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari
and the Church of San Rocco
. There are also two Scuole Grandi, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco
and the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista
, with the annexed church..
